The Wood Craver and Aschaffenburg

On Saturday March 31, 3019 we and our traveling friends, Elder and Sister Davis packed into our car and drove to the town of Johannesburg to visit the local wood craver.  Susan is very interested in "nativities" from different lands.  She has a collection from several places they have visited and likes to display them at Christmas time.

When we arrived at the wood cravers he invited us into his shop and he and his wife showed us around.  This shop consisted of several rooms with a large assortment of different nativity carvings.  They displayed all kinds of stables or creches and you could choose the figures to customise your nativity.  The wife showed us how she kept records of the various pieces people had bought over the years.  Returning families came each year and added to their collection.  All the pieces were all made of wood, but they had been painted and polished so that they looked as if they were ceramic.

We had a hard time deciding what to buy - but the wood carver told us we could put things on hold and then come back later and he would ship them home for us.

After finishing there, we loaded in the car and drove to the nearby town of Aschaffenburg.  Here they had a local outdoor market, a castle, and some beautiful Magnolia trees.

When we arrived it was lunch time so we went looking for food with a promise to return to the market for some fresh produce.  We found a quaint place and had a nice lunch.  Then we walked to the castle and looked around.  After looking at the inside courtyard we headed back to the market to find all the merchants packing up their trucks and heading home.  We have decided that the markets open at 10:00 and close at 2:00 (not 4:00 as we had thought).  By this time we felt we needed to go home as we had the Saturday night meeting of Stake Conference at 6:00pm.

Like rocks in a river, when the heavenly influence of charity continually washes over someone, its celestial current rounds the rough and stony edges, smoothes them, and spiritually polishes them.
