This week we were on our own, so we decided to visit another town and castle that was not too far away. We drove a little over an hour to the town of Ronneburg were we visited some of the historical sites from the 1700's and 1800's. Castles are usually located on a hill to provide a view of the surrounding area. This castle was built upon a hill overlooking an agricultural area. We enjoyed the tour, the view and the artefacts as we wandered through the various rooms. We had an enjoyable day and a renewed appreciation for being born in this day and age.
Below is a picture of the apothecary.
One of the rooms was labeled "Dungeon". All the next few pictures are from that room. It was pretty obvious how each was used.
People were not very tall then, as you can see by Gary standing in the doorway.
We were told that the well was more than the length of football field deep (120 yards or 109.7 meters). You could pour a bucket of water down, but it took a quite some time before you heard it splash.
After we left the castle we went to the nearby town of Büdingen. It started to rain, so checking out Büdingen will have to for another day.
